Jane Eyre by Charlotte Bronte

(Book Report)

As we all know, Jane Eyrewas Charlotte Bronte’s representative works .It was also a milestone works in English literature. After I was published in 1847, it arouse a blow to English litrature.Although it had caused some critics ,it also received popularity among the public. Charlotte Bronte was born in Yorkshire, England on April 21, 1816. Charlotte’s father was a poor pastor in her hometown, and her mother was a quite housewife. She was the third of the children. Her two sisters, Emily and Anne, were also the famous authors. So they were commonly called “the three sisters of Bronte” on literature history in England. When Charlotte was very young , Charlotte’s mother died of cancer. Because of her father’s tiny incomes, she lived a hard and unfortunate life when she was young . but soon her sisters and her were sent to Cowan Bridge, a school which her health and physical development was permanently affected Because of the outbreak of tuberculosis, Charlotte was brought home, and then Charlotte read a lot of books in her father’s book-room and began to try to writ something creatively on the literature. When she was fifteen years old, she left her hometown and returned to school for study .And then several years later, she became a teacher at the school. Then She left the school and become a private governess , and at the same time, wrote some literatures. Due to the deaths of her sisters, left her feeling dejected and emotionally isolated. In 1855, she died of pneumonia, while pregnant..Jane Eyre was not her first book but her first published masterpiece.

Jane Eyre told us the story that Jane Eyre was raised by her cruel, wealthy aunt, Mrs. Reed. Her uncle had passed away. At Lowood, Jane met a young girl named Helen Burns who shared a lot with her and became her best friend. A massive typhus

epidemic sweeps Lowood, and Helen died of it.. After a group of more sympathetic gentlemen takes Brocklehurst’s place,.Jane spends eight more years at Lowood, six as a student and two as a teacher. Then She accepts a governess position at a manor called Thornfieldwhich’s employer is a dark, impassioned man named Rochester, Jane found herself falling in love with him. On the wedding day , Jane found that Rochester already had a wife, Bertha . Rochester does not deny this, but he explains that Bertha had been already mad. Knowing that it is impossible for her to be with Rochester, Jane left Thornfield sadly.Without food and money, Jane was forced to sleep outdoors and beg for food. At last, three kind hearted people took her in. Their names are Mary, Diana, and St. John and Jane quickly became friends with them. They found Jane a job teaching at a school in Morton. One day a news said that her uncle, John Eyre, has died and left her a large roperty. Then she found that her uncle was also their uncle.Jane immediately decides to share her property with her three new cousins.St. John decided to travel to India, and he asked Jane as his wife. She refused to marry her cousin because she did not love him at all. Finally she found the man who she really loved so much was Rochester.Jane immediately went back to

Thornfield and found that it hadbeen burned to the ground by his mad wife who lost her life in the fire. Rochester saved the servants but lost his eyesight and one of his hands. At Ferndean, Rochester and Jane finally got married. At the end of the story, Rochester regained sight in one eye and was able to behold their first son at his birth. Then they lived a happy life forever.

After reading the novel, the image in the story may catch our attention. For instance, the fire image appeared in the story for dozens of times in different chapters. But no matter where it was put, it had symbolic meanings in some chapters, It was the symbol of warmth and happiness ,while in other place it was the symbol of humanity and friendship, sometimes it even represented destrutive power. In the story, the fire image impressed us a lot while reading it,we could say fire is a symbol of human civilization and forcus of the social and family life. Thus, fire plays an important role in the frame of the novel. At the, fire was the symbol of warmth and happy family life . Jane Eyre who was a strongwilled woman, tried her best to fight for her own happiness and love as well as freedom, for example “Now,let me leave you an instant to make a good fire?” , in this sentance we can see that rochester saw the magic power of “fire” in love ang this became a critical element to promote their. Thus, life was impartable from the fire, once the fire died out, thewould be disappearing.

Fire existed everywhere in this great novel ,when Jane and Helen were invited to dinner by Mr.Temple, the fire also plyed an important role as Janeeager to win the friendship of the others and it could make her felt warm and comfortable.Trough reading the novel ,it was easy to know that the love between Jane and Rochester was not smooth because true love should stand the test of fire .Facing Rochester’s prpose,Jane on the top of the sky and it seemed that her spirit was lifted. But this feeling just last a short period of time as the news that Rochester had got a wife almost drove Jane mad.The fire of love was set up but put out .But the fire set up again years later as the love between them had never fade away.

People alwaysthe beautiful aspect of the fire ,but they never knew that fire was a terrible thing . It bring us happinessbut it also could give us disaster. In the novel,Rochester’mad wife set s fire and lost her life .Rochester also lost his property and eyesight in order to save her wife’life. That is to say .this fire destroyed life ,fortune and health.

In all, we an see that fire had two opposite aspects. On the one hand ,it made the world warm ,harmonious, wonderful. But on the other hand , it can destroy life ,fortune and health. In addition, Jane’s personalityfire, she was kind hearted and sentimental and she also hadcharacter. Thus , it was this kind of “fire” that made her independent nd happy again. It was easy to see that throughout the story. Jane Eyre behaved strong-minded enough toher love and brave enough to seek her own independence. These are all the reflections of fire in her deep heart. Though lived in a cruel society and suffered from abuse, she never gave up, because the fire was always on in her heart which prevented her from giving into the convention.

At last,to be frank, Jane’s ideal life is the reflection of the Charlotte Bronte’s thoughts. Maybe we can say that Charlotte uses this great novels to express her feelings on the contemporary society.

第三篇:Reading Report about Jane Eyre 简爱读书报告

Reading Report about Jane Eyre

This is a story about a special and unreserved woman who has been exposed to a bad environment but continuously and fearlessly struggling for her ideal life. The story can be interpreted as a symbol of the independent spirit.

It seems to me that many readers’ English reading experience starts with Jane Eyre. I am of no exception. This novel present us an independent person, both physically and mentally.

Jane Eyre was a born resister, whose parents went off when she was very young, and her aunt, the only relative she had, treated her as badly as a ragtag. Since Jane’s education in Lowwood Orphanage began, she didn’t get what she had been expecting——simply being regarded as a common person, just the same as any other girl around. The miserable experiences teach Jane to be independent and strong. As a reward of resistance to oppression, Jane got a chance to be a private teacher in Thornfield Garden. There she made the acquaintance of lovely Adele and that garden’s owner, Rochester, a man with warm heart despite a cold face outside. Jane expected to change the life from then on, but fate had decided otherwise: After Jane and Rochester fell in love with each other and got down to get marry, she unfortunately came to know in fact Rochester had got a legal wife, who seemed to be the shadow following Rochester and led to his moodiness all the time ----Rochester was also a despairing person in need of salvation. Jane did want to give him a hand, however, she made up her mind to leave, because she didn’t want to betray her own principles, because she was Jane Eyre. After finding Rochester’s misfortune brought by his original mad wife, Jane chose to stay with him forever.

I don’t know what others feel, but frankly speaking, I would rather regard the section that Jane began her teaching job in Thornfield as the novel’s end----especially when I heard Jane’s words “Never in my life have I been awaken so happily.” This ideal and brand-new beginning of life was what Jane had been imagining for long as a suffering person; but, as we all know “Life is like a box of chocolates, you never know what you would get.” There must be something wrong coming with the excellence. That’s

Jane’s and most of ours real life.

What’s more, this story didn’t end when Jane left Thornfield. For Jane Eyre herself, there should always be somewhere to realize her great ideal of being independent considering her courage, but for Rochester, how he can get salvation? The book gives the answer tentatively: Jane eventually got back to Rochester. In fact, when Jane met Rochester for the first time, she scared his horse and made his heel strained, to a certain extent, which meant Rochester would get retrieval because of Jane. We can consider Rochester’s experiences as that of religion meaning. The fire by his mad wife was the punishment for the cynicism early in his life. After it, Rochester got the mercy of the God and the love of the woman whom he loved. Here we can say: human nature and divinity get united perfectly in order to let such a story accord with the requirements of both two sides. The value of this novel may be due to its efforts to explore a new way for the development of humanism under the faith of religion. Lifekeeps changing, but our living principles remain. Firmly persisting for the rights of being independent gives us enough confidence and courage, which is like the beacon over the freedom sea of life. In the world of this novel, we have found the stories of ourselves, which makes us so concerned about the fate of the dramatis characteristic.

In this era of rapid social and technological change leading to increasing life complexity and psychological displacement, both physical and mental effects on us call for a balance. We are likely to find ourselves bogged down in the Sargasso Sea of information overload and living unconsciousness. It’s our spirit that makes the life meaningful.

Heart is the engine of body, brain is the resource of thought, and great books are the mirrors of life. Indubitably, “Jane Eyre” is one of them.

第四篇:英文《简爱》影评

Actually, before watching the movie,I have read the book,of cause there was something different between them. in my opion, the book was more excellent than the film.

Jane Eyre, is a poor but aspiring, small in body but huge in soul, after having a long journey of the spirit, Jane Eyre, a marvelous figure, has left us so much to recall and to think.

When she was young, her parent were die, her uncle adobted her.after her uncle died, her aunt treat her very bad,and even closed her in the dark

bedroom, her little brother beat her,and her sister don’t treat her as a part of the family.

Eventough, she didn’t lose her heart, she was so brave. Her aunt send her to lowood school, and told the master there is the devil in her. The master

treated her as a liar, punnished her and orerd her stand on the tool without eat and drink untill midniaght. As a child how much hurtless she has suffered, and how much she has tolerated.

Not long before her best friend Helen has died in a fever, she disapart from Lwood school, and finished her painfull childhood.

After that she come to Thornfield as a tutor in that big house, then she meet her beloved Mr. Rochester, the master of that house.after deeply touched with each other, even there was some strange things happened,at last ,they come to a church and prepare to get married. But they was told Mr.Rochester have a wife who was alive ,unfotunately, his wife was mad.

Jane Eyre was hurt so deeply this time,so she left.

When she come back to her aunt, she find that her brother was died ,and her aunt was to die.Her aunt concealed the truth that her uncle leaved a

fortune to her after he died.but she forgived her aunt, and told her she love her.Even she was leaved thornfield, she missed Mr.Rocherster so much,at last ,she come to thornfield, and find Mr. Rochester was a deformed person. But that doesn’t matter ,she loves him , and would take care of him.

How kindless she is.for someone who lost arms and blinded in eyes, for someone who despised her for her ordinariness, and even for someone who had hurt her deeply in the past.

When we think of this girl, what she gave us was not a pretty face or a transcendent temperament that make us admire deeply, but a huge charm of her personality.

Her story makes us thinking about life and we learn much from her

experience, at least, that is a fresh new recognition of the real beauty.

第五篇:简爱英文读后感

One hundred and sixty years ago, when Charlotte Bronte created Jane Eyre, she could have never thought that it would become eternal. As a matter of fact, in the world of today, there are tens of thousands of Jane Eyre, each living in a reader’s heart, breathing with him the same air and sharing with him the same happiness and sorrow. Her rich mental world has become an inexhaustible resource of spiritual power. From Jane Eyre, people who are timid and shy get confidence and self-respect; people who feel imprisoned get independence and freedom; people who are lonesome get love and care. However, what I get from Jane Eyre is the courage of inner questioning and self exploring.

Who is Jane Eyre? As the story extends, more and more things are added to the answer. From the beginning, we know that Jane is a young orphan raised by Mrs. Reed, her cruel, wealthy aunt. From her experience at the Lowood School, we found Jane a plain-featured but intelligent and honest girl. Her courage to fight with all the hardships, oppression and inequality makes a deep impression on us. When she meets Rochester and St. John, Jane shows us both her passion for love and her sticking to her principles of justice, human dignity and morality.

While we are getting to know more about Jane Eyre, she is also exploring herself. When she leaves Gateshead, the little girl doesn’t know what to expect in the future. She has endured so much unfair treatment that all she desires is freedom. However, when Jane gets freedom, she finds herself yearning for new experiences, which can change her life of loneliness and neglect. She follows her innermost feelings and accepts a governess position at a manor called Thornfield, where she falls head over heels in love with her employer, Rochester.

Then it comes to the most important decision that Jane has to make in her life. Rochester already has a wife, but Jane wonders how she could ever find another man who values her the way Rochester does. To leave, or to stay, Jane is caught in a dilemma. At this moment, Jane closes her eyes and looks into her soul. I can well remember the words she says to herself: “I care for myself. The more solitary, the more friendless, the more unsustained I am, the more I will respect myself.” Guided by her soul, she flees temptation and leaves Thorfield. The second test comes when St. John urges Jane to accompany him to India as his wife. In many ways, the proposal tempts her, but it also means sacrificing passion altogether and devoting herself wholly to principles. Where to go? Again, Jane softly touches her innermost feelings. Who am I? What am I longing for? Is it pure freedom, or passion of love, or principles? From Gateshead to the Lowood, from the Lowood to Thorfield, from Thorfield to Moor House then to Ferndean, Jane has finally got the answer. Having gone through all these years, Jane no longer goes to extremes. What she is seeking for throughout her life is a kind of perfect balance between moral duty and earthly pleasure, between obligation to her spirit and attention to her body. Jane knows herself well and thus can have the strength to hold her own bliss in hand.

Jane Eyre sets us a perfect model of inner questioning and self exploring. How about us?

Looking back on the development of Jane Eyre’s character, we can see clearly the important role inner questioning and self exploring has played. “What you are you do not see, what you see is your shadow.” Self-knowledge is a hard process that everyone must go through. There are times when we are overwhelmed by all kinds of desires and lose ourselves in the crowded world. There are times when we just follow what others are doing and abandon our own dreams. To be specific, when asked why you are at school, how many students can honestly say that their answer well reflects their soul?

Actually, it is the question that my Grandpa asked me one day. We were working together in the garden, talking about my school life. I told him that as senior three students, we often have to burn midnight oil. “You are working hard!” he smiled, and then looking me in the eye, he asked, “But do you know what you are studying for?” I stammered. At that moment, I was completely at a loss. What am I studying for? Is it simply for getting a good score in exams or entering a good university and then finding a good job and leading a comfortable life? I feel confused. Grandpa patted on my shoulder, “You know something? Every brilliant life is different. What kind of life do you yearn for, my dear?”

I didn’t answer Grandpa. Only then did I realize how little I knew about myself. I have never before questioned myself what I really want. I thought about Jane Eyre. She is always exploring and questioning herself. That is why she is able to make her perfect life.

Jane Eyre gives me the strength. Now it’s time for me to look into my soul to see who I am and what I am longing for. I will no longer wander around, the moment my soul answers me with her deepest voice. I will fix my eyes on the road ahead, my own road, and keep going. I will hold my brilliant life in hand.
