批改作文是对学生作文的批示、评价和修改，是提高学生作文能力和认识水平的有效方法，是作文教学的重要组成部分。作文批改的内容主要有四个方面：一是思想内容方面，包括文章的立意，题材的选择，中心的确定，对生活的认识，对事物的理解等。二是篇章结构方面，包括层次的安排，段落的划分，详略的比重，文章的布局、过渡和照应等。三是语言文字方面，包括用词的准确，句子的通顺，修辞的运用，有无错别字、生造词以及狭隘土话等。四是标点符号的正确，字迹的工整，书面的规范等。以上四个方面，后两项往往不被重视，教师应该相应地采取切实有效的措施。
作文的批改方式一般有以下三种：
1、教师批改。教师批改一篇作文的步骤一般是：先通读全文，了解文章概况，并顺便勾划出错别字、病句、生造词、狭隘土话，订正标点符号;然后从全文出发，对内容、结构、选材、立意等方面逐段进行批改;批改完毕后，再通篇检查一遍，比较该生过去的作文情况，适当加以总批。教师的批改，应该从遣词造句到书写、文风、思想深度等方面都要成为学生的榜样，对学生起到示范作用。教师的批改，一般以作文课后的书面批改为主。在批改时，可以普遍批改，可以重点批改，轮换批改，也可以当面批改。批改的方式是多种多样的。教师可根据自教学的实际需要合理选用。但应尽量多采用普遍批改的方式，这是教师全面掌握学生作文实际的最有效的方法，也便于因材施教。
2、师生共同批改。
要认真提高学生的作文能力，就应该放手让学生自己写，自己改，放开他们的手脚，充分发挥他们的积极性和主动性;要提高学生批改作文的能力，教师就要注重培养，让学生在实践中得到锻炼。
师生共同批改也有不同的形式。较常用的有两种：一种是教师批、学生改。即先由教师认真翻阅学生作文，在需要修改的地方注上各种符号，或进行文字批示，提出修改意见，然后把作文发给学生自己修改。学生修改完后再收上来检查其修改情况，以便总结讲评和评定成绩。
另一种形式是教师作批改示范，让学生模仿学习。首先是教师示范。可以在全班作文中选出一两篇有代表性的习作印发给学生，然后再由教师示范批改。即由教师选出有代表性的习作，放手让学生自己去批改，再由教师归纳学生的意见进行总结;或者在教师的参与下进行适当的讨论，以便澄清是非，使学生得到提高。
3.学生自改或互改。
这是在师生共同批改的基础上对学生更放手的一种批改方式。它可以激发学生作文的兴趣，提高学生修改作文的能力。学生自改或互改必须在教师的具体指导下进行。教师要根据学生作文的实际提出具体的评改要求和重点，及时地、具体地对学生进行启发和指导。在一般情况下，学生改过后，教师还应当进行复批复改，以便订正学生漏改、误改和批语欠妥、评分不当之处。
作文批改中应注意以下几个问题：
1、批改学生的作文重视语言文字和标点书写两个方面。
2、在给每篇作文下总批时，应该有所侧重，要抓住主要矛盾，不应面面俱到，造成学生无所适从。通过一次作文批改，能解决一个两个比较重要的问题。
